What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of focused or fixed concentration which allows you to be highly responsive to positive suggestion.
When in hypnosis, the senses become more alert and the subconscious mind becomes relaxed and open to accept beneficial suggestions.
Physical and mental relaxation is strongly recommended in order to enhance the trance state, but even if you have difficulty in achieving relaxation, you are still able to benefit from hypnosis.
Everyone experiences light states of hypnosis – daydreaming, becoming totally absorbed in a TV show or computer program, driving on “auto pilot” are all examples of a light trance state.
How does Hypnosis work?
Our mind works on two levels – the conscious and subconscious. We make decisions, think and act with our conscious. Our subconscious controls our habits, emotions, imagination and creativity and retains our memories. In the altered state of hypnosis, we can allow the conscious judgmental mind to be bypassed, and communicate directly with the subconscious, so that beliefs, habits and behaviors that no longer serve us can be modified according to your current beneficial wishes and desires. That is why it is so easy to change habits of a lifetime with hypnosis.
Do People in Hypnosis have full control?
Absolutely! The state of hypnosis is a 100% consent state; a hypnotist cannot hypnotize you if you are not in total agreement. You are allowing the hypnotist to guide you into an altered state. Once you are in a hypnotic trance, you are free to accept or reject any suggestion at any time. You are in complete control at all times during the hypnosis session and will not do or say anything that you don’t want to do, that is against your will, or that you would not normally do.
Hypnosis is a very safe, powerful and effective tool that can be used to reinforce desired changes such as weight loss, becoming smoke free, reducing stress, eliminating fears and phobias and much more as long as you truly want the changes for yourself.
Is a hypnotized person asleep?
No. Hypnosis is not what we know as traditional sleep. When in hypnosis, your conscious mind is subdued, but it is not asleep. Your subconscious mind becomes open, highly focused and receptive to helpful, beneficial suggestions that it can choose to accept or reject.
What does a hypnotic trance feel like?
Each person experiences hypnotic trance in their own way. There is not right or wrong way. However, most people report feeling relaxed and completely at ease. A person in hypnosis is aware of everything that is going on around them, they are able to adjust positions if needed, talk with the hypnotist and made choices and decisions.
Even though the experience is very individual, the majority of people agree that hypnosis is a pleasant state of deep inner calm and physical relaxation. Deep hypnosis is similar in some ways to the kind of profound trance found in meditation. The main difference is that with hypnosis, there is a specific goal in mind as well as a state of heightened suggestibility. You are fully aware of your surroundings; feel calm, comfortable and totally relaxed.
I am currently seeing a psychiatrist for deep anxiety issues. Would I be able to use hypnosis as well?
This is a very important question. A certified consulting hypnotist is not qualified to diagnose or analyze. However, with a written referral from your medical doctor or psychiatrist, hypnosis with a qualified consulting hypnotist can be a very beneficial complementary treatment.
What is a Certified Consulting Hypnotist?
A consulting hypnotist uses his/her hypnosis skills to assist clients in creating and maintaining positive behavioral change without analyzing or diagnosing.
The title “Certified Consulting Hypnotist” (CH) is awarded to those who successfully graduate from the National Guild of Hypnosis course with a minimum of 85% in a written examination, and who maintain continuing education requirements.
Can anyone go into Hypnosis?
Most people can go into hypnosis. The exceptions are people who either consciously or subconsciously put up a barrier. Around 90 per cent of the general population can be hypnotized to varying degrees.
How long the sessions and what are is included in the initial session?
The initial visit includes a consultation to identify the desired goals, an assessment of issue history and potential challenges, a short tutorial outlining how hypnosis works, an action plan, and the actual hypnosis process. Self hypnosis is taught to every client at the conclusion of the initial session. The initial session can take between 90 minutes to 2 hours. Subsequent follow up visits, if needed, or for multiple goals, are approximately one hour long. We charge by the session, not the hour.
How do I make an appointment?
You may contact us request an initial appointment for Hypnosis. You will be e-mailed an Intake form which is to be completed and returned at least 2 days prior to your first appointment along with a $25.00 deposit, which is applied to your first visit.
What to expect during a Hypnosis Session
During our initial consultation, we first review your intake form and discuss how hypnosis works and answer any question or concerns you may have. Next we have an interactive discussion on your particular issue, the desired changes and potential challenges that may have been preventing you from making those desired changes in the past.
As a Consulting Hypnotist, I am able to assist you in specifically identifying both the issue and the desired changes or goals. It is not within my professional boundaries to diagnose or analyze. I do not judge. As with all treatments and services I offer, there is complete confidentiality.
Once we have agreed upon an action plan, the hypnosis phase of the session takes place. You are invited to sit in a comfortable chair, once permission is given to facilitate hypnosis; you are invited to close your eyes. Using a quiet, soothing voice, I proceed to guide you into an altered state that invokes a deep mental and physical relaxation and a heightened state of suggestibility. Being in this hypnotic state allows the subconscious mind to accept positive changes and affirmations that you have a strong desire and willingness to make.
As soon as a state of hypnosis is achieved, I use a variety of techniques and professional skills in order to assist you in establishing the desired positive changes into your subconscious mind. These changes can only be accomplished with your full cooperation, motivation and desire.
During each stage of the hypnosis session, you are completely aware of your surroundings and are always in full control of your own thoughts and actions. We are able to communicate either verbally or by other chosen method if it is appropriate to do so.
After the work has been completed, and while you are still in hypnosis, I offer personalized post-hypnotic suggestions and affirmations in order to reinforce the work.
Finally, you are gently emerged from hypnosis an invited to come back into a complete state of alertness. Once fully alert, the session is discussed and documented.
In order to achieve greater success, you are given instructions in self-hypnosis so that the suggestions can be continuously reinforced while you are at home over the following days and weeks.
If any additional sessions are requested by you, or recommended by me, the bookings will be made before you leave the office.
In the days after the session, you are encouraged to contact me by e-mail or voice message, with any questions or feedback.
